Clarendon Hills has built its reputation on single-vineyard expressions from the cool reaches of McLaren Vale, with Astralis Syrah as the flagship. Planted to low-yielding, dry-grown vines on a steep slope first established in 1920, the Astralis vineyard is managed for maximum site expression and natural concentration.

The 2016 vintage was harvested by hand, then fermented using wild yeasts and traditional open-top fermenters. Maturation took place over 18 months in 100% new French oak barriques, a regime designed to bring both structure and longevity while supporting the depth of fruit the site reliably delivers.

In the glass, Astralis 2016 is deeply coloured and aromatic, offering layers of blackberry, dark cherry, anise, and violet, with lifted notes of black pepper and subtle charcuterie. The palate is dense yet finely textured, showing a seamless interplay of fruit, oak, and powerful but velvety tannins. Long, balanced, and commanding, this is a cellar-worthy Syrah that speaks clearly of place and craftsmanship.

Reviews

Appetizing scents of roasted meat and cinnamon toast meet red raspberries and black cherries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is densely concentrated and richly textured but closed, locked up by firm, dusty tannins that bar the lengthy finish from expanding and being truly expressive. I'm tempted to say buyers should check in on the wine in five years, but that may not be enough time. If you absolutely must check it out now, taste it repeatedly over the course of a full evening to catch glimpses of espresso, black olives and delicate herbal nuances.
Made with grapes from nearly 100-year-old vines, this is a polished yet multifaceted wine. Brambly berries, mocha, black olive, graphite, sweet herbs and bay leaf are just some of the characters to be found in this bottomless well of a bottling. Tannins are chiseled and powerful, juxtaposing concentrated fruit and backed by well-placed French oak. Drink 2023–2033 and likely well beyond.
