Kaesler’s deep roots in the Barossa Valley stretch back to 1893, when their first vines were planted on the ancient soils of Nuriootpa. The estate’s legacy is inseparable from its old-vine plantings, many exceeding 70 years of age, and the “Alte Reben” Shiraz comes exclusively from these mature, dry-grown blocks. Vineyard practices are time-honoured, prioritizing sustainability and careful fruit selection, with each plot tended to highlight its unique contribution to the final blend.

The 2017 vintage brought a slightly cooler growing season to the Barossa, favouring freshness and aromatic lift. Fruit was hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, open-fermented in small lots with gentle plunging to retain natural structure, then basket-pressed and matured in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barrels. The resulting wine is both vibrant and powerful, with layers of black cherry, blueberry and dark plum interwoven with notes of licorice, clove and hints of cured meat. The palate is structured yet supple, showcasing dense tannins, a core of juicy fruit and a finish marked by savoury depth and spice. This is a classic expression of Barossa old-vine Shiraz, demonstrating both the richness of the region and the finesse possible from Kaesler’s meticulous approach to their most prized vineyard material.

Reviews

This has aromas of violets, earth and spice, as well as a blackberries, raspberries and bergamot. Spicy, earthy notes and cocoa powder, too. The palate is so full of interest with an ethereal texture to the tannin that holds so much information and detail. The purity of blue fruit here is enthralling and the effortless plum and violet flavors hold very long. Real old-vine fruit purity here. From vines planted in 1899.
Deep red colour with a good purple tint. The bouquet is spicy and complex, elegant and restrained, with star anise and balsamic herb accents, a hint of Campari and attendant herbal bitterness, the palate full-bodied and powerful with a long-lasting aftertaste. A big, bold and very impressive shiraz. Some acceptable bitterness in the tannin/alcohol combination. A long-term wine.
