Majella Wines, founded in 1982 on Coonawarra’s classic terra rossa soils, has earned a reputation for producing Cabernet-based wines of depth and longevity. The Malleea is the estate’s flagship, conceived to showcase the synergy of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from some of the region’s most established vineyard blocks. The 1999 vintage enjoyed balanced conditions that promoted full flavour development while preserving natural acidity. Fruit was hand harvested, fermented in small static fermenters with careful extraction and partial barrel fermentation, then matured for 22 months in new French oak barriques. The resulting wine layers cassis, blackberry and mulberry with cedar, spice and mocha, underpinned by fine tannins and savoury complexity. Structured yet polished, it is a classic expression of Coonawarra that demonstrates both varietal power and regional finesse, with the balance to reward long-term cellaring.

Reviews

An oaky but finely crafted cabernet shiraz blend whose deep, dark, iodide-like aromas of cassis, blackberries and cedar reveal spicy, slightly meaty and leathery undertones. Its spicy, peppery palate is full to medium in weight, with intensity and density to support short- to mid-term cellaring.
