enfolds, established in 1844, is Australia’s most renowned producer of Cabernet Shiraz blends, with Bin 389 often referred to as “Baby Grange” for its shared maturation in barrels previously used for Grange. The 1996 vintage was a standout year across South Australia, delivering small crops of intensely flavoured fruit. Bin 389 blended Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and longevity with Shiraz for richness and spice, showcasing the depth of old-vine vineyards from multiple regions. Fermented in stainless steel before maturation in seasoned American oak hogsheads, the wine harmonised ripe cassis, dark plum and liquorice with smoky vanillin oak and firm, velvety tannins. Jeremy Oliver rated the 1996 at 97 points, describing it as one of the very best 389s, seamless in integration and promising exceptional cellaring potential. Today it stands as a benchmark vintage of Bin 389, combining power, polish and enduring balance.

Reviews

One of the very best 389s, this wonderfully deep, dark and savoury wine presents a sumptuous, seamless integration of intense spicy dark berry fruits, plums and licorice with smooth, smoky American oak and velvet-like firm tannins. Its restrained strength and balance suggest an exceptional future.
