Penfolds, founded in 1844, is one of Australia’s most enduring and innovative wine estates, with the Cellar Reserve range dedicated to experimental small-batch bottlings. The 2013 Cellar Reserve Durif was sourced from low-yielding Barossa vineyards, a region well suited to the variety’s natural power and tannin structure. Traditional vinification in open fermenters was followed by maturation in oak, highlighting Durif’s hallmark colour density and robust palate weight. The wine opens with dark blackberry, plum and licorice layered with cocoa, spice and earthy undertones. Firm yet polished tannins drive a long, savoury finish, making this release a distinctive expression of Durif through the Penfolds lens. Structured and ageworthy, it captures both regional strength and the experimental spirit of the Cellar Reserve program.
