Penfolds introduced Koonunga Hill in 1976 as an affordable expression of the house style, drawing on shiraz and cabernet from multiple South Australian vineyards. The 1990 vintage, regarded as one of South Australia’s strongest, produced wines of concentration, ripeness and structure across the region. For Koonunga Hill, the fruit showed plush character with panforte, mint chocolate and earthy demi-glace aromas, supported by generous dark berry and plum notes. Maturation in seasoned oak provided balance without dominating the fruit, allowing varietal detail to shine. Now fully mature, the palate has softened into savoury layers of cedar, dried fruits and spice, framed by supple tannins. This release remains a snapshot of the early 1990s Penfolds style, offering both historical interest and a distinctive example of shiraz–cabernet blending at value level.
