Petaluma was established in 1976 by Brian Croser to showcase wines from South Australia’s most distinguished vineyard sites, with Coonawarra chosen for its capacity to produce structured, cellarworthy reds. The 1993 vintage in Coonawarra delivered even ripening conditions that accentuated the region’s hallmark balance of fruit concentration and natural acidity. Crafted from merlot planted on the famous terra rossa soils over limestone, the wine was fermented in small parcels before maturation in French oak to enhance complexity and frame varietal character. Aromas of red plum, black cherry and cedar open into a palate of ripe fruit layered with earthy spice and herbal nuance. Fine, savoury tannins and fresh acidity carry through the finish, creating a wine that reflects both the elegance of the region and the winemaking precision for which Petaluma has become renowned.
