Penfolds Grange stands as Australia’s most celebrated wine, combining carefully selected Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from South Australia’s top vineyards. Since its inception in 1951, Grange has set benchmarks for richness and longevity, matured in new American oak to build layers of dark fruit, spice, and chocolate complexity. The 1997 vintage, shaped by a cooler year, offers a lifted bouquet of plum, blackcurrant, cedar, and mocha. Structured yet balanced, it exemplifies Penfolds’ mastery of blending and cellaring, delivering a wine of enduring power and finesse

Reviews

Medium to full red, with just a touch of purple remaining; powerful, complex dark fruits, chocolate and savoury lemon/vanilla oak on the bouquet, then a similarly powerful palate where earth and chocolate join the chorus of flavours promised by the bouquet; persistent tannins, of course. It's hard to suggest this will be regarded as a great Grange in 20 years or so, but it is nonetheless in the mainstream of Grange style.
A vintage, we were told, that was 'overshadowed by huge years on each side.' It may have been overshadowed for years, but it is just great right now! Seductive texture, like sea-polished driftwood. Cedar and dark fruit and graphite and iron and touch of wild thyme. Very elegant. Shadowy but a wine with subtle strength. Early-morning campfire. Smoke and pepper. Perhaps the least rich of the five Grange vintages, but the one wine where port-sweet fruit stepped back to allow so much more complexity of herb and spice to come to the fore. I thought that this was quite special. And so lovely for drinking now. 18.5/20 points
