Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2004 exemplifies the pinnacle of Italian winemaking tradition and excellence. Since 1888, the Biondi-Santi estate has set the benchmark for DOCG Brunello di Montalcino, crafting wines only in exceptional years that meet their rigorous standards. This prestigious Riserva vintage, sourced from the estate’s 26 hectares of vineyards planted on steep hillside slopes, represents the perfect harmony between heritage and terroir.

Meticulously hand-harvested grapes undergo fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vats, preserving the pure expression of Sangiovese Grosso. The wine is then matured for several months in large Slavonian oak barrels, maintaining the elegance and power characteristic of Tenuta Greppo’s style. Extended bottle ageing further refines the wine, resulting in a beautifully balanced and complex profile.

On the palate, the 2004 Riserva offers extraordinary depth and refinement with intense aromas of ripe red cherries, leather, spices, and subtle earthy notes. It delivers a powerful yet graceful structure supported by firm, silky tannins and vibrant acidity, promising remarkable ageing potential for several decades. This wine is truly worthy of its place among the world’s finest.

Antonio Galloni awarded this vintage an impressive 96 points, highlighting its superb quality and longevity. The region of Montalcino is celebrated for producing some of Italy’s most age-worthy Sangiovese wines, with the 2004 vintage benefiting from ideal climatic conditions that enhanced concentration and balance.

Perfectly suited to pair with gourmet dishes such as rack of lamb, prime rib, or pork in caramel sauce, this Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2004 elevates any dining experience. Coming from a premium private cellar, it offers connoisseurs and collectors alike a rare opportunity to enjoy one of Italy’s most iconic, long-lived wines.

Reviews

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is just beginning to open up. The flavors remain bright, focused and vibrant, but the tannins are quite silky, which gives the wines an unusual level of accessibility. Still, the 2004 is a real baby. Readers who can wait will be rewarded with a magnificent Brunello. The 2004 has the freshness, acidity and overall structure to age effortlessly for decades. Tasted next to the Annata, the Riserva is darker, richer and more powerful. In time, though, I am not sure it will be meaningfully better or more complex.
The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is impeccable and classy. Ripe red fruits, flowers and minerals are some of the nuances that emerge from this fresh, vibrant wine. The fruit remains incredibly youthful and pure all the way through to the finish. This is a surprisingly supple, fruit-driven style of Riserva from Biondi-Santi, and with time in the glass the reluctant bouquet finally emerges. Some of the explosiveness of the best vintages (such as 2001) is missing, but the wine nevertheless impresses for its finesse and impeccable overall balance. The 2004 Riserva looks to have a long life ahead of it, but it is so harmonious that opening a bottle in its youth, while not optimal, is far from infanticide. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034. I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Biondi-Santi this year. Of course, Biondi-Santi is the estate that put Brunello di Montalcino on the map, so it is nice to see this historic property doing so well. These remain some of the most rigorous, age-worthy Brunellos readers will come across. Traditional vinification and aging in large, neutral casks are the rule. Ideally the wines are best left in the cellar for at least a decade after release, but readers will have a very hard time exercising such restraint here. These are magnificent Brunellos.
