The 2023 Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard 'Cuvée R' is a profound, darker, and more mineral-driven expression of Northern Rhône Syrah compared to its sibling, Chaillots. Sourced primarily from the domaine’s oldest, prized vines on steep granitic terraces, it uncoils with an intense, sophisticated aromatic profile of cassis, mulberries, crushed violets, and a distinct vein of graphite and black pepper. On the palate, this full-bodied wine strikes an extraordinary balance between the inherent, wild power of the Reynard lieu-dit and a seamless, velvety texture. It is tightly packed with layers of concentrated black fruits, framed by a tensile core of structural acidity and fine-grained tannins, leading into an exceptionally long, ethereal finish that doesn't quit.
True to Allemand’s strict minimal-intervention philosophy, the fruit underwent whole-cluster fermentation using native yeasts and was trodden by foot. True to his conviction that new oak only brings faults to Cornas, the wine was raised for 24 months in older neutral foudres and barriques, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur. The 2023 vintage represents a true high-water mark for the estate—possessing a majestic depth and precise concentration that makes it incredibly age-worthy, meaning collectors will want to keep this tucked away in the cellar to reach its peak maturity window between 2029 and 2047.

Reviews
One of the finest wines crafted by Thierry Allemand, the 2023 Cornas Reynard wafts from the glass with aromas of mulberries, blueberries, violet, rose and pepper. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it’s seamless and concentrated, built around a tensile, precise core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal finish. This is a bottle that Northern Rhône lovers will want to have in the cellar.

Coming mostly from older vines in the Reynard lieu-dit, the 2023 Cornas Reynard is darker and more mineral-driven, offering loads of violets, cassis, and graphite aromatics. Full-bodied, balanced, and serious on the palate, it delivers incredible purity and finesse, with a finish that won't quit. This is a profound, age-worthy Cornas that's probably the Cornas of the vintage. I'm always amazed how this estate marries the inherent wildness of Syrah grown on this steep, granite slope with incredible finesse and elegance, which I think is the hallmark of Allemand.
