Comando G’s Las Umbrías 2015 is a standout expression of Garnacha from the rugged Sierra de Gredos in central Spain. Crafted by Fernando García and Daniel Landi, this wine exemplifies their commitment to biodynamic farming and minimal intervention, capturing the essence of high-altitude, old-vine Garnacha.

Sourced from a mere 0.5-hectare east-facing parcel in Rozas de Puerto Real, the vineyard sits at 1,000 meters above sea level on granite soils with patches of clay. The 60-year-old vines yield fruit of remarkable purity and finesse. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, followed by a 60-day maceration and aging for 12 months in 500L French oak barrels.

In the glass, Las Umbrías 2015 presents a pale hue, belying its aromatic intensity. The nose is highly expressive, offering floral notes alongside red berries. On the palate, it is delicate yet structured, with fine acidity and a mineral backbone. The finish is long and nuanced, reflecting the wine's elegance and complexity.

This vintage showcases the potential of Garnacha from the Gredos region, offering a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and minerality. It is a wine of both power and grace, suitable for aging or enjoying now with dishes like roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, or aged cheeses.

Reviews

"The 2015 Las Umbrías suffered in comparison with the 2016, as it's possibly the most ethereal of their parcels and shows the effect of a warm vintage in a stronger way and usually takes time to overcome it. This feels a little awkward at the moment, a little closed, even with a touch of volatility but should come around with a few years in bottle. It slowly reveals the notes of decayed roses that showcase the finesse of this extremely elegant terroir. I'm confident it will show better (hence the + in my score), but I should revisit this in a couple of years."
"Superb purity of wild raspberries here with red flowers. Impeccably fresh. The tannins are like velvet, smoothly arranged and gently layered, carrying ripe wild raspberries and cherries into the finish. Wicked drinkability."
