Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri 2004 stands as a masterful expression of Tuscany’s prestigious Bolgheri terroir. Crafted from vineyards rooted in a unique blend of limestone, marl, pebbles, and clay soils, this vintage captures the essence of its complex terrain and ideal microclimate, with elevations ranging from 80 to 400 metres and a west/south-west exposure that promotes exceptional grape ripening.

The 2004 growing season was marked by balanced weather conditions: a rainy winter with moderate temperatures ensured healthy vine development, followed by a sunny spring that enhanced bud fertility. Summer arrived mild but culminated in a hot August, enabling a consistent and uniform maturation of grapes across all plots. Careful vineyard management, including selective grape thinning, maintained quality and reduced yields to optimal levels.

Harvesting took place under perfect conditions, with thick, healthy skins and no disruptive rains, allowing meticulous selection of the ideal harvest date for each vineyard parcel. The winemaking process included fermentation in stainless steel vats at a precise temperature range of 30 to 31°C, with an extended two-week maceration and several délestage techniques to refine texture and flavor. Malolactic fermentation was also conducted in steel to preserve freshness.

Ageing in French oak barrels, with one-third new wood, for 24 months imparts refined complexity and structure, while a final six-month maturation in glass ensures balance and elegance before release. The result is a wine of remarkable depth, with layered aromas of rich dark fruit, spice, and subtle earthy notes.

Highly acclaimed by critics, this vintage has earned a 97-point rating from Stephen Tanzer and boasts a glowing review from Decanter, describing it as “unarguably stunning.” Sourced from a premium private cellar, it offers collectors and enthusiasts alike a rare opportunity to experience one of Italy’s most iconic wines at its peak.

Sassicaia 2004 exemplifies the pioneering spirit of Tenuta San Guido and the distinctive character of the Bolgheri region, renowned for producing Bordeaux-style blends with remarkable finesse and aging potential. This wine is a testament to meticulous viticulture and masterful craftsmanship, promising a luxurious tasting experience filled with elegance and power.

Reviews

Deep ruby-red. Captivatingly intense yet refined aromas of ripe red cherry, mint, smoke and black truffle, complicated by lovely mineral and floral elements. Ripe, rich and velvety on entry, then concentrated in the middle, with flavors of red cherry, cassis, spices, bay leaf, dark chocolate and espresso. Amazingly well balanced and fresh wine, with sound, bright acids supplying wonderful lift and precision and smooth, noble tannins adding considerable power and grace. The finish goes on for minutes, highlighted by an enchanting floral-mineral quality; in my experience, the appearance of this strong floral component (in the absence of herbal or peppery aromas and flavors more typical of lesser vintages) at this early stage of development is typical of the greatest versions of Sassicaia. One of the top dozen Sassicaia bottlings ever.
The best Sassicaia of the last 10 years, the 2004 vintage is an outstanding achievement. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc highlight the beauty of Tuscany and portray the region in terms of thick chocolate fudge, succulent cherry and currant, exotic spice and vanilla seed. Beyond those big aromas are little teasers: blue flowers, Mediterranean herbs, cola and light mineral shadings. It’s lush and full in the mouth and will hold 20 or 30 years. *Cellar Selection*
