Ardbeg Heavy Vapours is a journey into the darker heart of Islay. For this limited edition, Ardbeg did something radical, they removed the purifier from the still, a key component that usually refines the spirit’s character. Without it, heavier compounds make their way into the distillate, creating a whisky that’s deeper, denser, and more intense than anything in the core range.

On the nose, it’s unmistakably Ardbeg, but dialled up in all directions. There’s pungent smoke, damp earth, liquorice root, and medicinal herbs. Beneath the savoury fog lies a twist of menthol, dark chocolate, and smoked citrus peel. The palate is full-bodied and commanding, with flavours of scorched rosemary, coal dust, leather-bound books, espresso, and black pepper. It’s as if the distillery’s soul has been dragged through a bonfire and bottled.

The finish is long, ashy, and slightly bitter, with lingering notes of iodine, soot, and herbal resin.

Heavy Vapours is not for the faint-hearted. It’s Ardbeg unleashed, stripped of elegance and bursting with elemental power. A must-have for die-hard peat fans, Ardbeg Day collectors, or those who want to explore the bold extremes of Islay whisky.
