Saltram No. 1 Shiraz 2004 is a quintessential expression of Barossa Valley’s rich winemaking tradition, crafted by one of Australia’s most prestigious wineries. This super-premium Shiraz draws its name and inspiration from the historic No 1. Shiraz originally produced in 1862 by Saltram’s founders, William and Edward Salter, symbolizing a legacy of excellence and dedication to quality.

Harvested during the favorable 2004 vintage, this wine reflects the unique terroir and warm climate of the Barossa region, renowned for producing bold, intensely flavored Shiraz wines. The grapes were carefully selected from a premium private cellar, ensuring only the finest fruit contributes to this revered release. The result is a deep, garnet-colored wine that captivates with concentrated notes of dark berries, ripe plums, and subtle spice nuances, seamlessly intertwined with velvety tannins and a prolonged, elegant finish.

Barossa Valley’s reputation as one of Australia’s premier Shiraz regions is well established, thanks to its capacity to nurture grapes with exceptional ripeness and balanced acidity. The 2004 vintage, in particular, benefited from optimal weather conditions, producing wines with remarkable depth, complexity, and aging potential. This vintage’s combination of richness and refinement highlights Saltram’s meticulous winemaking practices and respect for tradition.

The Saltram No. 1 Shiraz 2004 stands as a distinguished example of classic Barossa style—powerful yet sophisticated. Its expressive character makes it equally suitable for immediate enjoyment or extended cellaring, promising further evolution and enhanced complexity over time. This wine is a true testament to Saltram’s enduring passion and expertise in crafting Australian fine wine, securing its place as an exceptional addition to any fine wine collection.

Reviews

A seductive mix of ripe (but fresh) black fruits, aniseed, coal, chocolate box, spice and well measured toasty vanilla oak. Sensational. On the palate full bodied with oceans of mouth filling black and red fruit, spice, mocha, aniseed and tar flavours. Not heavy, this is really fresh and lively with rolling waves of fine tannin and refreshing clean acidity. Persistent and long. What a great Shiraz.
Deep, dark fruits led by blackberry and a touch of prune, but no dead fruit; an icon Barossa wine from a great vintage with a virtually unlimited life; tannins and oak spot-on, and bravo for the screwcap.
