Penfolds, founded in 1844 in South Australia, is recognised worldwide for its mastery of Cabernet and Shiraz, and Bin 600 marks the expansion of this tradition into California. The fruit is drawn from Napa Valley and Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Shiraz grown in Paso Robles, planted from original Penfolds vine stock introduced decades earlier. The 2018 vintage delivered consistent ripening across California, ensuring depth and balance in both varieties. The blend is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Shiraz, vinified separately before maturation for 16 months in American oak hogsheads, 40% new and 60% seasoned. The resulting wine opens with dark berry fruit, cassis and mulberry layered with leather, iron, crushed rock and savoury spice. On the palate, richness and plush fruit are balanced by fine acidity and tannin, leading to a long, earthy finish. Bin 600 demonstrates Penfolds’ ability to translate its Australian heritage into a Californian landscape, producing a wine that is both regionally distinctive and unmistakably Penfolds.

Reviews

78% cabernet (Napa Valley and Sonoma) with 22% shiraz (Paso Robles). Matured 16 months in 60/40% one-year-old and new American oak barrels. Peter Gago describes his entry-level ('if you'd call it that!') California blend as strongly Australian influenced, 'because there couldn't be anything more Australian than cabernet shiraz'. He lets cabernet take the lead here, 'because it's so much better than shiraz in California.' The ultimate multicultural marriage, a far-flung take on the great Australian blend, exuberantly celebrating the luscious, ripe and generous mood of California within the signature scaffolding of Penfolds. A core of cabernet is proclaimed in impressive blackcurrant and cassis, with a fleshy mid-palate built by the spicy blackberry fruit of shiraz. In time, it morphs triumphantly into intense fresh licorice straps. Fine American oak and fruit tannins unite to form a taut frame that declares a strong finish of great length and grand potential.
Beautiful filigreed tannin. Lots of plummy, minty, curranty flavour. Oak has sunk right down into the wine. Outstanding quality here. Gentle wafts of leather, even game, but in the nicest possible way.
