Grosset Gaia is a benchmark Clare Valley blend named after the Gaia vineyard, which sits high in the hills at the edge of the region. The 2016 vintage is built around Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant portion of Cabernet Franc, all grown organically and picked for balance and clarity. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (about 40% new), adding depth without masking the vineyard’s character.

In the glass, the 2016 Gaia is immediately expressive - cassis, blackcurrant, and dark cherry lead, supported by bay leaf, tobacco, graphite, and a hint of dried herb. The palate is medium-bodied and focused, with firm tannins and lively acidity providing length and structure. There’s impressive clarity and drive, with the wine’s dark fruit and savoury, mineral edge evolving as it opens. This is a Gaia built for the cellar, combining purity, elegance, and lasting power - a true expression of place and vintage.

Reviews

Estate-grown cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, the certified organic vines 33yo. A breath of fresh air, pulling my lip up and out of the Dante's inferno of other wines in this particular tasting. Supple and immaculately balanced, every flavour, texture and beautifully nuanced fruits that are 100% within the varietal makeup, the tannins almost lustrous, so fine are they. Drink by 2046
7000 bottles made. Clare Valley blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Prestige producer. It’s a medium weight wine with class written all over it. The flavours run on strict, straight lines and as it turns out, that’s a very good thing. Boysenberry, leather, plum and fresh blackcurrant flavours are served with overtones of pencil/milk chocolate and bay leaves. Tannin is as fine-grained as can be. Tobacco-like, undergrowthy characters add yet more to the offering. It’s not a thumper; it’s just long, pure and complex. Drink 2022 - 2040.
