Penfolds Grange, first crafted by Max Schubert in 1951, is Australia’s most iconic wine and an enduring benchmark of shiraz. Built on a philosophy of multi-regional sourcing across South Australia and maturation in American oak hogsheads, Grange defined the modern era of Australian fine wine. The 1965 vintage, produced during a stable growing season, was crafted predominantly from Barossa Valley shiraz with supporting parcels from other South Australian districts. Decades of bottle age now reveal fully developed tertiary complexity, with flavours of dried fig, leather, tobacco, cedar and savoury earth unfolding over softened structure. Oak influence has integrated seamlessly, leaving a wine defined by balance, persistence and mature grace. While bottles may show natural variation at this age, well-stored examples demonstrate the longevity and historical significance that make Grange one of the world’s most collectible wines.
