Penfolds introduced Koonunga Hill in 1976 to deliver an affordable expression of the house style, built on the classic Australian combination of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. The 1996 vintage in South Australia began with drought-breaking rains, followed by a cool summer that slowed ripening and produced fruit of excellent balance and structure. The blend comprises 51% shiraz and 49% cabernet sauvignon, sourced from multiple vineyard districts to maximise regional complexity. Fruit was fermented in small batches and matured for twelve months in a mix of French and American oak, bringing spice and supple texture to the wine. Aromas of plum, dark cherry and spice sit over a palate of red fruits, rhubarb and savoury herb, framed by fine chalky tannins and a lingering finish. With 13.5% alcohol, bright acidity and firm structure, this release demonstrates the durability and character that have made Koonunga Hill a cornerstone of the Penfolds portfolio.
