94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc

The Standish Wine Company, founded by Dan Standish, has quickly established itself among Australia’s most respected boutique producers through a focus on single-vineyard expressions and minimal intervention winemaking. Drawing fruit from select old-vine sites in the Barossa Valley, including the family’s own prized plantings, Standish pursues a philosophy that prioritises traditional techniques, careful handwork in the vineyard, and a keen sensitivity to the individuality of each parcel.

The 2015 vintage brought a season of low yields and small, intensely flavoured berries, thanks to a warm and dry growing period. Grapes for The Standish Shiraz were hand-picked, with meticulous sorting before wild fermentation in open-top fermenters. Gentle extraction and basket pressing were used to preserve purity and texture, while maturation in seasoned French oak allowed the vineyard’s character to remain at the forefront. The resulting wine is deeply aromatic, with layers of blackberry, black cherry and plum, lifted by notes of anise, black pepper and subtle earth. The palate is plush and full-bodied, framed by finely structured tannins and a persistent, savoury finish. The Standish Shiraz 2015 exemplifies the depth and intensity of Barossa old-vine fruit, while also reflecting the artisanal care and site-driven ethos that define Dan Standish’s approach.

Reviews

It made for a challenging assignment when I had to choose just one wine to be my wine of the year in my annual West Australian Wine Guide 2020. In the end I came down with the Woodlands, which I have to say has claims to be finest yet in this distinguished line of great wines. The Woodlands was also judged best red wine and best Cabernet Sauvignon, a mighty feast. One of the most beautifully elegant of these super premium Woodlands Cabernets. This was a vintage known for the heft of its tannins, harnessed to be part of an elegant wine of blissful refinement. Perfumed notes of black fruit and violets. The palate is so beautifully woven with effortless power and length.
Each year, the Woodlands Cabernet Sauvignon is named after a different family member. The 2016 Clementine Eloise Woodlands Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon boasts wonderfully pure cassis aromas, with subtle underpinnings of vanilla and baking spices. It's medium to full-bodied, plush and silky, adding notes of raspberries, mulberries and vanilla along the way to a long, mouthwatering finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon (94% of the blend) comes from the estate's original 1973 plantings, while the balance is 4% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc.
