This ‘St Joseph Rouge’ is produced by the Gonon brothers, Pierre and Jean, who have earned a reputation for producing some of the most impressive and sought-after wines in the Northern Rhône. They typically exhibit purity of fruit, balanced structure and a distinct sense of place.

The Gonon’s are firmly entrenched in the top handful of names in the Rhone Valley these days due to their diligent, manual organic vineyard work, rows ploughed by their trusty plough horse Samson, to their meticulous work in the winery and careful aging in seasoned barrels of various formats - from 100 year old Foudres to demi-muids to Burgundian Pieces.

Reviews

A fairly straightforward year for the Gonon brothers despite fairly low yields of 28hl/ha. The 2017 is rich and generous in fruit and ripe tannins, but is so well held together and ushered into shape. It's densely coloured, with beautifully fresh herb aromas and super-fresh, pure blackberries on the tongue. It has plenty of relief and texture, with crisp acidity and a long, mineral finish. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030.
The 2017 Saint Joseph showed beautifully and has a slightly more elegant yet sunny profile compared to the bigger, richer 2018, revealing a deep purple color as well as sumptuous notes of black raspberries, crème de cassis, toasted spices, ground pepper, and a terrific sense of minerality. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the pool, with ripe, sweet tannins, and a great finish, it’s another terrific wine from this estate which is unquestionably in the top handful of domaines in Saint Joseph. You can drink bottles today or cellar for over a decade.
